The Department of Economics offers programs of study leading to the Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in economics. The program is ranked 10th in agricultural and natural resource economics, and 19th in economic history amongst all PhD-granting institutions in the United States. Newly revamped and constantly expanding, the program seeks top-performing students who are prepared to conduct rigorous research. Students do not need to have a bachelor's degree in economics, but applicants should have a strong math background.
The MA curriculum includes core courses on theory and econometrics and electives.
Approximately two-thirds of the PhD students in the program qualify for funding in the form of graduate or research assistantships, which includes tuition scholarship and medical insurance.
The program has a strong emphasis on quantitative training. The PhD in particular requires a solid math foundation. For students who lack background in calculus or linear algebra, or those who wish to have a refresher course in those subjects, a “math boot camp” is offered free of charge to all admitted students prior to the start of the fall semester.
The program boasts expert faculty who are distinguished in their fields of research. Small class sizes (ranging from 5 to 25 students) fosters high student-faculty interactions. Faculty is available for advising and research supervision. The department hosts regular seminars and workshops where students are exposed to prominent visiting scholars and ongoing research by the faculty and colleagues. Students can also take advantage of the proximity to New York City for internship and job opportunities.

Graduates have also been placed in both domestic and international institutions such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Morgan Stanley, Finanzas y Technologia, Goldman Sachs, the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, Temple University and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
