About Adelphi University

Founded in Brooklyn in 1863 as Adelphi Academy, a private preparatory school, Adelphi University was officially founded as a college in 1896. Adelphi is a private, regionally accredited university with a well-rounded curriculum of liberal arts programs with a focus on Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, the Business and Education Professions, and Health and Wellness. It promotes a personalized approach to teaching – including small classes and hands-on learning – to help students achieve academic success.

Application for Adelphi University programs can be completed online. Application deadlines are in Fall, Spring, and Summer; many programs offer rolling admissions.
  • The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is not required for admission into any programs and is not considered in evaluating applications.
  • Admissions requirements vary from program to program but most require two letters of recommendation, a personal essay, undergraduate transcripts, and completion of prerequisite courses.

Adelphi Degree Highlights

Special Education:

This program is designed to provide teachers with the skills to help students with a diverse range of abilities and disabilities to reach their fullest potential. The program trains teachers to work in inclusive settings and regular classrooms that encourage children to become as independent as possible and to integrate them into a broad spectrum of activities.

Physical Education:

This program is designed to teach life skills through sports and games. Innovative activities and a holistic approach to education is the program’s primary focus. Students can select a program – such as coaching, physical education, sports studies – that may complement teaching. Students may also choose to participate in other focused topics and workshops offered during the summer and January intersession.

Social Work:

The curriculum for the Master of Social Work program provides the skills, values, knowledge, and ethics for a general social work practice. The program readies students with sophisticated clinical skills for work with individuals, small groups, families, and couples.

Nutrition:

The curriculum for a degree in nutrition seeks to enhance licensed and practicing professionals with skills and knowledge that could help them seek out leadership roles in such areas as community and public health, education and research, clinical, business and industry, wellness, and media. Graduates of this degree may end up as managers, researchers, educators, advocates, and directors who can provide leadership in creating and implementing programs and policy concerning nutrition.

Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing:

In this program, students will have the opportunity to meet with agents, writers, editors, and administrators to gain a better understanding about becoming a professional writer. Adelphi University retains active partnerships with the New York and national literary scenes and offers a rich experience through intimate workshops and mentoring.

Online Programs

Students can pursue an online graduate degree at Adelphi University in a number of programs, which are offered as either online full time or partial time. Online graduate degrees include Art Education, Educational Technology, Emergency Management, Social Work, and Nutrition.
