Southwestern College is a haven and a magnet for students searching for a holistic graduate program and a meaningful career in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or Art Therapy. You will experience deep personal growth, and our Consciousness-Centered approach will guide you to exceptional careers and leadership positions.
Diversity is extremely important at Southwestern College, both in the student body and in the range of teachings and theoretical orientations. Our six Professional Certificates provide opportunities to create your own "niche market" private practice. They include Human Sexuality, Trauma, Grief & Renewal, Infant Mental Health, Children's Mental Health, Applied Interpersonal Neurobiology, and Transformational Eco-Psychology.
Unlike most programs, we do not just download information into the student, and ask them to give it back to us. We help you discover your own Inner Voice, or Inner Teacher, allowing you to develop your own Inner Authority in clinical matters. Our field is, after all, more art than science, a notion strongly supported by decades of research.
Our philosophy embraces a transformational, experiential education, using a combination of transpersonal psychology, spiritually sensitive counseling, Jungian psychology, evidence-based counseling and art therapy modalities. You will have opportunities to do a Vision Quest, learn from Native Elders, and other diverse, alternative healers. SWC is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and the American Art Therapy Association. Because Art Therapy is licensed as a separate discipline in only some states, SWC's Art Therapy/Counseling degree offers the valuable benefit of license eligibility in BOTH Counseling and Art Therapy--that is a huge benefit in the job market, as you will see if you follow Art Therapy in Social Media (Linked In & Facebook, primarily.)
Santa Fe offers a rich, colorful cultural makeup and a most stunning environment at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. We are surrounded by the nineteen Northern New Mexico Pueblos, which are fascinating Native villages reported to be a thousand years old. We are about an hour from Taos (a fascinating town), an hour from Albuquerque (our “big city”—about 750,000). The skiing in New Mexico is powder, powder, powder, and the hiking is fantastic.
We do not require the GREs, as we do not find that kind of "learning" helpful in determining who will be an extraordinary helper and healer, but only who will probably be good at academics. Though our programs are rigorous, "academics" is not our focus--rather, we concentrate on your personhood, your intuitive capacities, your inner alignment and truth. Those are not measured in standardized testing like the GRE.
Our unique Conscious Entrepreneurship initiative offers courses in Social Media, How to Build Your Own Private Practice, branding, web-based marketing of your practice and related topics. We do not know of another graduate program in the mental health fields that offers that kind of help in understanding the "business" part of the mental health business.
There is not another Counseling program like ours in the country.
