Global Sports Business
The Rutgers University Global Sports Business master’s degree program is designed to train leaders for careers in all sectors of the sports industry. It is a broad-based, inherently global, industry-specific program of study that draws upon Rutgers’ traditional strengths in finance, marketing, management and law, as well as its location in the New York/ Philadelphia/Washington northeast corridor, the center of the sports industry. The program's’ interdisciplinary approach ensures that students develop a broad range of skills to prepare them for successful careers in the sports industry. Approached from an entrepreneurial perspective in the $500 billion a year global sports industry, the program provides insight to how international businesses operate effectively to achieve success.
Our program offers a broad curriculum preparing students for the world of sports business and administration, corporate marketing, sponsorship and branding, athletic representation, professional and recreational facilities ownership and management, hospitality and tourism, media and entertainment production, and advertising and merchandising careers.
The Global Sports Business Master of Science (GSB), a 40-credit hour, full-time program that begins in the fall of each year, is designed to create principled, innovative leaders that generate ideas that advance management practice within a wide range of professional and cultural exchanges.
Unique to the GSB program is the personalized attention that each student received in our Mentorship Program. Each Master’s candidate is mentored by accomplished executives from all areas of the sports industry. Mentors work with students from the time they enter the program and are chosen based on each candidate’s interests and career goals.
This approach places emphasis on the development of industry-specific job skills in the field of international sports marketing through a combination of rigorous academic training and in-depth executive training experiences. Our executive training programs enable us to produce graduates who are fully prepared to enter the workforce, often directly with the company at which they interned, bringing value-added skill sets specific to the sports industry that they have targeted for their careers. Our curriculum is centered around developing strong career skills which will immediately benefit employers, training students with hands-on projects during their graduate school tenure.
After successfully completing this program, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Understand critical issues impacting international business activities.
- Develop skills needed to evaluate foreign market potential, with emphasis on market entry.
- Learn frameworks for complex cross-border decision-making .
- Explore emerging market opportunities.
Each course is instructed from a global perspective, reflecting the international nature of the sports industry. This perspective makes our students prepared to enter an ever-globalizing career industry and sports marketplace, preparing them to conduct business internationally and locally in top sports industries.
The program focuses on how enterprises plan, design and execute their global supply chain operations in sport industries--such as consumer products, high-tech, and retail in developed and emerging economies where firms must rely on the integration of a network of suppliers, manufacturers, distributors and retailers to provide products and services. Outsourcing and off-shoring, automation, centralization, complexity and risk--all aspects in global supply chain management--require new management practices, tools and concepts to succeed. The program addresses this new approach with a study of expert knowledge, cases and analysis that covers purchasing, manufacturing, logistics, inventory management, technology, global trade, network design and best practices in various industries.
The GSB program ensures a strong, interdisciplinary approach, drawing from the long-established interdisciplinary resources from the School of Arts and Sciences. The business of sports draws heavily from psychology, sociology, communications, labor studies and law, as well as the humanities in general because of its focus on quality of life issues. In creating an educational curriculum for the sports business world, we harness that passion via a framework of intellectual inquiry coupled with practical application, to build confidence, knowledge, and skills.
Our approach in the Global Sports Business M.S. Program is to ensure that it encompasses critical thinking, goal-setting and time management, cultural analysis and interpretation, high-level mathematical skills, and context-specific problem solving.
