Program Description:

Monmouth's graduate literacy program in education prepares students to become skilled reading professionals in elementary and secondary schools. Professional opportunities from this degree program include becoming:

  • A more effective classroom teacher
  • Basic Skills Teacher
  • Literacy Coach
  • Reading Specialist

The Literacy Program:

  • Is based on national standards of the International Reading Association
  • Is designed for exemplary teachers who have an initial teaching license
  • Provides opportunities to expand knowledge, 21st-Century skills and dispositions in teaching literacy to all learners
  • Supports coaching to colleagues and parents
  • Targets the achievement of P-12 learners
  • Addresses the needs of special education and linguistically diverse students
  • Focuses on an in-depth knowledge of the reading and writing processes
  • Assists teachers in creating literate environments that motivate P-12 learners

Our 30-credit reading specialist  program includes four online courses, one hybrid (alternating between meeting in the classroom and meeting online) and five courses that meet in the classroom. Required courses include:

  • Administration and Supervision of Literacy Practices and Professional Development for School Leaders
