History (MA)

Program Description:

The Master of Arts in History is an advanced degree opening doors to endless possibilities. History, more than the study of written events and records, allows us to become educators, researchers, communicators and editors, information managers, advocates, or even businesspeople. Whether pursuing a teaching career, museum or & archival work, or a profession that requires critical reading and writing skills, a master's degree in history enhances credentials and assists in career advancement. The program also provides advanced preparation for graduates to enter PhD programs.

In addition to the general MA degree, the University offers three vital specializations:

·         World History

·         History of the United States

·         European History

Each specialization is designed to enhance competence in the field, increase professionalism, and develop leadership. Those who wish to specialize in one of these areas and are planning to pursue a doctoral degree may complete a master's thesis. Graduates of the Monmouth MA in History have gone on to PhD programs at various universities throughout the country. Students with a general interest in history may pursue a broad-based program and opt to take a comprehensive examination in lieu of a thesis. Each of these options requires the completion of 30 credits.
