Master of Health Science (MHS)
FDU’s Master of Health Science (M.H.S.) program is responding to the growing demand for educated and highly skilled professionals in the pharmaceutical industry, health care delivery and health science-related fields.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs in the health sciences are expected to grow between 25% and 35% by 2020. The metropolitan NY/NJ area has long been at the center of the world’s pharmaceutical and health sciences industries. New Jersey is now home to 300 biotechnology companies, and 20 pharmaceutical and medical technology firms — and 17 out of the world’s top 20 have major facilities in the state.
The 31-credit interdisciplinary M.H.S. features blended online and face-to-face classes at FDU’s Florham Campus in Madison, NJ. Faculty includes professors from FDU’s Becton College in biological/allied health and chemistry/pharmaceutical sciences; the School of Pharmacy; Petrocelli College of Continuing Studies; and Silberman College of Business.
Based on their career interests and professional goals, students can choose one the following four tracks:
Gateway to Professional Studies Track
This one-year (33-credit) intensive program of study is designed for students who have earned their bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, pharmacy or a related field, and seek admission to a health care-related professional school (medical, dental, veterinary, pharmacy, chiropractic, optometry, podiatric or physical therapy). This track also provides a solid background for careers in pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, including pharmaceutical sales, business and management, regulatory science or science teaching.
Clinical Research Administration Track
As the health care industry pushes forward into new areas of research, the need for scientists with the ability to conduct rigorous, ethically grounded and credible research will continue to grow. This program provides training in the basic principles of clinical research — analyzing data, interpreting medical literature, and communicating results — and the overall management of clinical drug, biological and medical device trials.
Regulatory Science Track
The primary goal of this degree track is to prepare students for significant roles in government agencies, pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries, health care provider organizations, and other sectors of the health care industry where compliance and regulation are crucial. The track will allow students to develop a comprehensive understanding of the protocols, procedures, statistical analysis, assessment of risk/benefit, documentation, and legal and ethical concerns that play a critical role in the day-to-day responsibilities of the field.
Technology continues to revolutionize the management and delivery of health care information, particularly with the growing shift to electronic health records and digital recordkeeping. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has identified health informatics - the intersection of information technology, computer science and health care - as one of the 20 fastest-growing occupations. This program includes a special emphasis on the application of health informatics as related to the delivery of prescription drugs and medication therapy management.
