The Physics department at Montana State University is widely known for its excellent teaching and student mentoring. We have strong academic programs with graduate curricula leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. An appropriate combination of class work and independent investigation is planned with individual faculty advisers, taking into account their particular abilities, preparation and goals of the individual.
The principal research concentrations in the department are in Astrophysics, Relativity, and Cosmology (ARC), Condensed Matter Physics, Lasers and Optics, Physics Education, Solar Physics, and the Space Science and Engineering Lab. Numerous outreach activities carry physics to K-12 teachers, classrooms, and the general public. Student involvement is central to all of our education, research, and outreach activities. Our success in these endeavors is a tribute to the extraordinary efforts of the 26 tenure-track and research faculty, 13 postdoctoral fellows, 58 graduate and 90 undergraduate students, backed up by an outstanding and highly motivated supporting staff. Montana State University is a comprehensive land-grant university, recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as a Tier 1 research university. MSU has an enrollment of approximately 12,000 students and is located in the beautiful Gallatin Valley, 90 miles north of Yellowstone National Park.
