Flexibility is at the heart of the Brown School’s curriculum. The two year, 60-credit-hour MSW degree allows students to find theirpath to social impact. Students orient their coursework with one of ten concentrations, including an option to Individualize, and can further focus their coursework with one of six Specializations. Outside of the classroom, students have the option to select their practicum location from a list of over 400 affiliated partner organizations, applying their knowledge from the classroom in a real-world setting that aligns with their career goals.
Brown School courses are taught by tenured and tenure-track faculty, each committed to creating new knowledge and bringing that knowledge both into the classroom and the community. The Faculty are transforming social service systems through evidence-based approaches to interventions, quality improvements, and organizational change. Faculty are on the forefront of child welfare, community development, gerontology, mental health, violence and injury prevention, and asset building. For students, this means access to path-breaking research and opportunities to work along faculty in research assistantships or during a research-based practicum.
The doctoral program in social work provides the nation and the world with some of the profession’s best scholars, teachers and researchers. The program involves intensive training in social science research methods and theory, with personalized mentoring by some of the leading scholars in the fields.
Students at the Brown School have access to the resources of Washington University in St. Louis, one of the nation’s preeminent research institutions. This includes access to the world-renowned School of Medicine for outstanding practicum placements and the Gephardt Institute for Public Service to promote civic engagement and community service by partnering with local and international communities.
