Program Description:

The provides opportunities for growth in the writing of fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and poetry translation, as well as practical training in literary editing. The program fosters a strong sense of each writers identity and ensures close contact between students and faculty. The UMSL MFA Curriculum - A Total of 39 Credit Hours •15 Hours of Workshop Classes. Twelve of these hours must be taken in your genre (poetry or fiction) •3 or more hours in Form and Theory (writing craft seminar) •3 or more hours of Literary Journal Editing (Natural Bridge) •3 hours of MFA Thesis The remaining hours can be taken in graduate level literature, composition, or linguistics classes.


The University of Missouri-St. Louis is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association. This accreditation applies to all baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral levels. Our next scheduled comprehensive evaluation will be 2018.
