Program Description:

The Master of Arts degree in Art History at the University of St. Thomas is an advanced course of study that seeks to prepare its students for the demands of independent research in art history and to present their results in a variety of public and scholarly venues. Graduate courses focus on issues and problems in art history, the process of defining and carrying out a research agenda, the use of various methodologies and theories to define and interpret evidence, and the ability to read both analytically and critically original and scholarly material. The program emphasizes an inclusive perspective that encompasses a range of media and global cultures and a contextual approach to art that examines its social, economic, political, and religious importance.

The Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies was created in response to the interdisciplinary job market and has been designed through the Department of Art History to meet the needs of students seeking to establish or retool their skill sets in order to enter the field of museum studies and non-profit work. Through the Certificate in Museum Studies, students will investigate the critical issues facing museums today. Students will explore the practical skills necessary for successful museum careers and consider the ways in which new audiences, technology, theory, exhibitions, collections, and innovative programming shape the museum field. The Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies program includes opportunities for dialogue with museum professionals, hands-on projects, and visitor experiences.
