You can be admitted to the online or on-campus program as a new or established teacher in Minnesota.
· Minnesota teachers who already hold licensure can add the Minnesota K–12 English as a Second Language (ESL) license to their credentials.
· Those who hold a bachelor's degree and are seeking a Minnesota teaching license for the first time will earn their licensure while focusing on this specialty.
A cohort model allows for a small team of students to collaborate in convenient locations across the state. Aside from classes, this program includes a field experience and a student-teaching component to ensure you're learning the right skills under the guidance of a teacher and university supervisor.
· M.A. degree with initial teaching licensure: Allows students without teaching credentials to prepare for initial teacher licensure while also preparing for Minnesota ESL licensure.
· M.A. degree with additional licensure: Allows currently licensed teachers to seek Minnesota ESL as an additional licensure upon completion of the program.
· M.A. degree without additional licensure: Allows currently licensed teachers to complete an M.A. degree without seeking Minnesota ESL as an additional licensure upon completion of the program.
Upon completion of the M.A. in ESL, you can:
· Employ a variety of methods, techniques, and program models suitable for second-language instruction with diverse learners, including adapting existing materials
· Facilitate full inclusion of students with limited English proficiency in the school setting
· Communicate successfully with students, parents, colleagues, and community members
· Develop communication instruction in the second-language context
· Determine student readiness and place in appropriate ESL programs while evaluating their progress
· Understand how the historical, social, and political aspects of language and cultural patterns in the United States influence second-language instruction
· Integrate an understanding of ESL, pedagogy, students, learning, classroom management, and professional development
The demand for ESL teachers in Minnesota is booming. Between 1997 and 2017, the number of English Learner (EL) students in Minnesota grew by 300 percent, making it the fastest-growing population.(English Learner Education in Minnesota, 2017) With the large and growing immigrant population spanning multiple cultures and languages—including Spanish, Hmong, Somali, Vietnamese, and more—this demand isn't likely to dissipate any time soon.
