Program Description:

This program serves graduates from bachelor’s degree programs that wish to develop expertise in literacy instruction. This might include elementary and secondary teachers, those who work in college developmental programs, family literacy programs, adult basic education, GED and high school equivalency programs, or workplace literacy programs. Students will be able to strengthen their competencies and acquire new Ideas and skills. Elementary, secondary and K-12 teachers may earn a reading endorsement on their teaching certificate if so desired. Coursework taken in the program may be used for the continuing education requirement for teacher certification in Michigan and includes the reading course required for professional certification. The program is not intended as an initial certification program. The Education Specialist Program is designed primarily for practitioners in the field who are interested in assuming literacy leadership and curriculum positions within school buildings, school districts, or community agencies and groups. This certificate program consists of a minimum of 30 credit hours of advanced work beyond the master's degree. Additionally, for those who already hold a master's degree, the K-12 Reading Endorsement can be achieved through this program. Courses constituting the major are determined by the major advisor. The Doctor of Education (Ed.D) in Reading, Language, and Literature prepares individuals for positions in institutions of higher learning, education renewal centers, state and national education agencies, and K-12 school districts. The program is designed for those individuals who are committed to the enhancement of literacy for all learners; whose career goals emphasize the development and improvement of literacy curriculum and instruction; who desire to prepare themselves for literacy leadership roles in pre-service and in-service teacher education; and who will serve as agents of change, creating and expanding the varied institutions and programs to support continued literacy advancement.
