Program Description:

Students who come to the Tufts Public Health program have a vision: they want to make the world a better place. Recent graduates who have decided to pursue a public health career; health professionals wanting to become experts in their field; clinicians looking for a population based approach to health care problems; individuals whose interests cross disciplines seeking a way to combine educational experiences- all come to Tufts because the administrators and faculty are committed to making these goals a reality. Tufts takes pride in ensuring that its philosophy that public health is critical to an equitable society is infused in its teaching. It also takes pride in ensuring that graduates leave the program with skills they can use to start or advance a public health career. Opportunities abound for learning about and researching current public health issues. Faculty and fellow students are likely to be significantly connected to ongoing projects all along the spectrum of public health. The Applied Learning Experience requirement demands a significant field experience in which students carry out a population based project of their own making, which is evaluated by both faculty and field preceptor. Tufts is known for recognizing complementary areas of study and developing degree programs around them. The combined MD/MPH was the first program in the United States to permit both degrees to be earned in four years. Tufts now has several dual degree options, which allow for maximum synergy between disciplines. And, because the educational experience in such programs comprises more than just the sum of its parts, students graduate with knowledge above and beyond that of two single degrees. The Tufts DrPH degree offers students training in the public health disciplines and practice, with an applied, interdisciplinary view. The program draws from Tufts University’s distinguished graduate schools in medicine, dentistry, nutrition, veterinary sciences, engineering and international relations.
