Master of Arts in Teaching and Liberal Arts: Dual Degree

Format: Campus

Program Description:

These unique dual-degree programs combine a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT),
leading to initial licensure for Elementary Education (grades 1–6) in Massachusetts,
with a second full master’s degree in Gender/Cultural Studies or History. Our unique
dual degrees afford the opportunity for students to acquire an interdisciplinary graduate
education that will lay the foundation for various potential career tracks. The MAT
degree offers exceptional preparation for teaching careers in public, private, or charter
schools, while the content-area master’s degree serves to deepen and inform one’s
teaching practice, as well as to provide scholarly preparation for those who wish to
pursue further studies at the doctoral level. Additionally, the content-area master’s
degree can be used to fulfill requirements for professional licensure, as required in
Massachusetts after five years of teaching with an initial license.

Our graduates find rewarding careers in the classroom and are well positioned for
leadership roles that require robust content knowlege, such as that of curriculum
coordinator. Others pursue advanced studies in their content areas and may eventually
pursue teaching opportunities at the college level. Alternative career options may
include work in libraries or museums, as well as in consulting, writing, educational
publishing, and non-profit positions.

These 60-64 credit programs require seven liberal arts courses and seven education
courses, as well as a semester-long student teaching practicum or a year-long student
teaching internship.
