Program Description:

The exposure and thinking at Northeastern University's Counseling and Applied Educational Psychology programs is comprehensive and interdisciplinary. We integrate thought streams in counseling, psychology, administration, and health sciences to give you broad thinking and numerous tools to use in guiding and supporting your diverse clients. As a counseling psychologist trained at Northeastern University, you may find yourself in any number of varied and fascinating settings. With the broad-based training and placement experience you undertake at Northeastern, you can serve clients in a variety of clinical settings and give them attentive, focused care to help them recover from trauma and ongoing conditions. Northeastern's is the only such program that allows you to select concentrations like forensic counseling, child and adolescent counseling, health psychology, or cultural, gender, and political psychology. *The Counseling Psychology Doctoral Program is designed to prepare masters level students for counseling psychology practice and research in a variety of settings with children, adolescents, families, and adults from culturally diverse backgrounds. The program is designed to meet both Massachusetts state licensure requirements and the accreditation requirements of the American Psychological Association. However, currently the new Counseling Psychology PhD Program is not accredited by APA, although we intend to pursue accreditation when eligible. The program emphasizes: Multicultural competence Problem prevention and health promoting practices An ecological and community-oriented approach Expertise in outcome and counseling research *Northeastern University is uniquely disposed and situated to provide an intensive two-year Master of Science program in School Counseling by virtue of its commitment to academic excellence and experiential learning. Also, its urban location and immediate access to local suburban communities offer the widest range of opportunities for engaging in a year-long, supervised practicum in virtually any type of school setting. One may specialize in working with students at the kindergarten to middle school levels, or those at the middle and senior high school levels. Those interested in studying School Counseling at Northeastern University may apply as full or part-time students at any time of the year. Upon graduation, graduates will be eligible for Massachusetts state provisional certification through its 36 credit hour curriculum (see curriculum below) or may take 12 additional credits (four graduate courses) to meet the most stringent of national standards. 2006-07 pass rate for Northeastern students taking the MA Communication and Literacy Test is 100%. *Northeastern University offers a Master of Science (M.S.) in Applied Educational Psychology and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study(C.A.G.S.) in School Psychology. The entire three-year program (M.S. and C.A.G.S.) has full approval from the National Association of School Psychologists and the Massachusetts State Department of Education.
