Program Description:

Classical Studies encompasses all the material and intellectual culture of the ancient Greek and Roman world. It includes the study of language and creative literature, of political and social history, and of philosophy, religion, art and archaeology. It is thus the original and most comprehensive of interdisciplinary fields and the cornerstone of the idea of liberal education. At the same time, it is heir to a long tradition of exacting and specialized scholarship. The linguist and the critic, the archaeologist, the epigrapher and the various historians of events and ideas all have special contributions to make. Classics is therefore also distinguished by the degree of cooperation it supports among persons of disparate expertise. The department of Classical Studies at Boston College is small and congenial, with a faculty that enjoys teaching while at the same time being active in research and publication. It has the feel of a small college department in the midst of a major university. The Department has five full-time faculty members plus two part-time lecturers; as many as nine faculty members in other departments have teaching and research interests in the ancient world. In addition to welcome from the classical studies department the outstanding facilities of O’Neill Library, the department possesses its own library and seminar room and provides access to valuable Boston institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts. The department sponsors various lectures and discussion groups, bringing in scholars from other universities and supporting talks by our own faculty and graduate students.
