Program Description:

The Comparative Biomedical Sciences (CBS) department was formed by the merger Veterinary Physiology, Pharmacology, and Toxicology with Veterinary Anatomy and Cell Biology. Although there are a variety of disciplines under the umbrella of this new department, it was decided that the common thread to unite everyone in research was cell and molecular biology. The department has successfully recruited faculty with cell and molecular biology skills and significant extramural funding — much of it from the NIH. The department has ranked in the top ten for the past five years among all the departments at Louisiana State University in terms of extramural funding. LSU's Comparative Biomedical Sciences (CBS) program has access to state-of-the-art equipment through various centers within the school. The department graduate program is rapidly growing and the mixture of graduate students working toward a Ph.D. degree (16) with the numerous postdoctoral researchers (10) provides a lively and scholarly atmosphere in which to work.

The AVMA Council on Education (COE) is the national accrediting agency for veterinary medical education in the United States. The AVMA COE assures that minimum standards in veterinary medical education are met by all AVMA-accredited colleges or schools of veterinary medicine, and that students enrolled in those colleges or schools receive an education that will prepare them for entry-level positions in the profession. Historically, the LSU program has met all essential requirements for an acceptable college or school as established by the AVMA COE since the graduation of its inaugural class in 1977. Full accreditation was renewed for the School in 2013 for a period of up to seven years, with the next site visit anticipated in 2019.
