Nutrition is a science that depends upon many scientific disciplines. It can be studied at many levels, from cells, to whole organisms, to people, to populations. Multiple approaches are needed to determine the optimal intake of nutrients or bioactive components in foods (e.g. botanicals and phytochemicals) and to determine how specific compounds and diets can be used to improve health, performance, and prevent disease. The Interdepartmental Nutrition Program (INP)integrates traditional disciplines like physiology, biochemistry, and cell biology, and extends this information into the realm of clinical science and populations to provide a diverse training ground for M.S. and Ph.D. students. The program was designed to accommodate a variety of paths under the umbrella heading of nutrition. We currently train students in four emphasis areas: biochemical and molecular nutrition; human and clinical nutrition; animal health, growth, and development; and public health nutrition and nutrition education. Additional research opportunities are available in the area of Food Science under the umbrella designation "Foods for Health." Faculty from 15 departments at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana and from the Indiana University School of Medicine at Indianapolis, Indiana and Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne participate in this program to provide a wide range of expertise and cross-training, facilities, and an exciting interdepartmental seminar series each semester. GRE Requirements: V/Q 1000 or better; TOEFL Requirements: 600 or better (paper-based), 250 or better (computer-based); TOEFL iBT Minimum Requirements: Writing 18, Speaking 18, Listening 14, Reading 19, and Overall 77.
