Program Information

Degrees Offered:

Ph.D., M.A.;

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The Department of Linguistics at Northwestern University offers programs of study leading to the Ph.D. and M.A. degrees. Both programs provide students with a solid foundation in linguistic theory, with an emphasis on empirical and experimental methodologies. After receiving training in basic linguistic theory, students are provided with considerable flexibility in designing their own courses of study. We encourage students to pursue research topics that span more than one subfield of linguistics and integrate findings, solutions, and methodologies that traditionally lie outside their particular area of specialization.
