Program Description:
The Department of History is committed to providing all students with a historical perspective in its graduate courses so they can better understand the present and can look to the future with knowledge of the past. This program is designed to serve all who desire a more sophisticated understanding of history. This program provides graduate students with (1) an understanding of history as a mode of inquiry, (2) an in-depth exposure to at least two different historical fields, (3) a grounding in historical research methods, and (4) an introduction to the art of historical interpretation.

Students have the choice between two options.
Thesis Option
HIST-401 Historiography and Historical Method............3 cr.
Seven graduate-level history electives….......................21 cr.
Two graduate research seminars..................................6 cr.
HIST-499 Thesis Seminar.................................................6 cr.
NOTE: Students must pass (1) a written comprehensive examination covering material from their courses and (2) an oral thesis defense examination.
Non-Thesis Option
HIST-401 Historiography and Historical Method.............3 cr.
Seven graduate-level history electives ..........................21 cr.
Two electives in history or another relevant field.............6 cr.
Two graduate research seminars.....................................6 cr.
NOTE: Students must pass a final comprehensive examination covering the course work.
