Program Information

Degrees Offered:

Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Science

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The Master's in Medical Laboratory Science (MS-MLS) program to  prepares students to become competent and qualified Medical Laboratory Scientists.  The MS-MLS program focuses on training students to enhance the health of individuals, communities, and the larger global environment through the discovery, application, and dissemination of knowledge; and service with others. The program imparts exceptional leadership training, acquisition of a clinically relevant base of scientific knowledge, and critical thinking skills necessary to engage in clinical laboratory practice, industry, or research.

The MS in Medical Laboratory Science prepares students to be competent in the following areas:

  • Laboratory Leadership
  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Hematology
  • Immunohematology
  • Immunology
  • Microbiology
  • Hemostasis
  • Molecular Diagnostics

Program Goals

  • Provide students with the competency and depth of knowledge in major disciplines of the clinical laboratory to enter the profession of medical laboratory science.
  • Facilitate the practice of strong written and verbal communication skills sufficient to serve the needs of patients, the health care team, scientific peers, and the public.
  • Cultivate the next generation of scientists’ leadership abilities to help guide the changing landscape of health care.

Program Structure

  • This is a full-time degree designed to be completed in 5 continuous semesters, including one summer session.
  • The first three semesters students are based at Health Science Campus of Loyola University Chicago and consist of didactic lectures and student laboratory training experiences.  The fourth and fifth semesters are largely composed of a clinical practicum, where students are immerged in laboratory medicine at one of our clinical affiliates.
  • Time to completion- two years.

The MS-MLS program is designed for students who hold minimally a BS/BA in areas other than Medical Laboratory Science with completion of the following courses:

  • 16 semester (24 quarter) hours of biological science with laboratory, including microbiology
  • 16 semester (24 quarter) hours of chemistry with laboratory including one semester in organic or biochemistry
  • 3 semester hours of mathematics
  • Students must possess the essential functions of a MLS.  Essential Functions are the non-academic qualities a student must meet in order to fulfill the essential requirements for being a Medical Laboratory Scientist. A link to the essential functions can be found on our website.

Practicum/Internship/Research Opportunities

MS-MLS student will be required to participate in a structured practicum at a clinical affiliate during their second year of study.  Students will also be required to complete a Capstone Experience and Project providing the opportunity to explore leadership, internships, and practice in areas beyond those of a standard Medical Laboratory Science curriculum, including research or industry. The capstone project includes a written synthesis paper and oral presentation during the students’ final semester and is required for degree completion.

Expectations after Graduation

  • Graduates of the MS-MLS program are eligible to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Medical Laboratory Scientist Board of Certification exam.
  • When you graduate with a MS in Medical Laboratory Science you will be prepared to successfully pass the professional certification examination and gain employment as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. Career options include opportunities in laboratory medicine, biomedical research, teaching, or managerial positions in academia, clinical laboratory medicine or industry. Graduates are exceptionally well-prepared to become the clinical industry leaders of tomorrow.

The program is seeking accreditation by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS)
