Program Description:

The M.Ed. in Secondary Education aims at preparing individuals for work in schools serving predominantly low income students in urban communities.  This program builds on individuals’ content knowledge, while deepening and broadening their understanding of teaching and learning in urban contexts. The program strives to prepare individuals to be effective educators in urban schools and improve the quality of education offered to young people in the Chicago metropolitan area. Several university projects and community collaborations further the opportunities for individuals to be involved in a variety of educational experiences.

Subjects: Loyola offers Type 09 certification in the following areas: Biology, Chemistry*, English, French, History, Italian, Latin, Math, Physics, Political Science*, Psychology*, Spanish and Theatre*. Individuals are required to have a minimum of 32 hours in their field of study prior to admission. Graduates of the program will receive a master's degree and Type 09 Secondary Certificate for grade 6-12 with an endorsement in a subject area.

* Political Science, Psychology and Theatre require a second teaching field.

An integral component of the program is classroom clinical experience. These experiences allow individuals to become involved in off-campus educational experiences, including guided observations, tutoring, attending school board meetings, observing classroom activities, and conducting small group or whole class instruction. Individuals must be available for clinical experiences in the morning or afternoon when schools are in session.

This program is NCATE- and ISBE-approved.
