Program Description:

Each year, Illinois public and private schools enroll more students whose first language is not English. As an ELL teacher, you will have the opportunity to help these students bridge the language gap, become proficient in English and achieve academic success. 

Lewis University's College of Education offers a special post-baccalaureate program, training educators to teach English Language Learners of all grades.

As a student, your required courses will include:

  • Foundations of Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Populations
  • Linguistics for the Teacher of English Language Learners
  • Cross-Cultural Studies for Teaching English Language Learners

Reading is the skill that unlocks success; literacy is essential to higher education and career advancement. If you teach a student to read well, you are helping them succeed in every other area, too.  Educators who excel in teaching reading are necessary to the health of our school system.

This program will give you the skills and resources you need to provide effective instruction in language arts. You will take courses such as:

  • Child and Adolescent Literature
  • Methods and Practicum in Reading Diagnosis and Remediation of Reading Problems
  • Teaching Writing in the Literacy Program
