M.S. - Geography;
The Department of Geography at the University of Idaho emphasizes the study of human-environment interactions in a constantly changing landscape.
The department emphasizes the integration of human and physical geography and encourages the use of geospatial technologies including GIS, cartography, remote sensing and computational analysis.
The department also has a teaching and research emphasis on many aspects of global climate change, from mechanisms, impacts and adaptation to natural systems and society. We offer a minor in Global Climate Change.
The department has strengths in physical geography (including biogeography, hydrology, climatology and meteorology) that seek to understand mechanisms and spatial processes of the global environmental system. Likewise, the department has strengths in human and political geography that seek to understand patterns and process within social systems. Finally, where the physical and society systems meet, we ultimately seek to understand the impacts pertaining to both human and physical systems in a changing planet.
All students admitted to the program are automatically considered for a research assistantship or teaching assistantship.
Research assistantships (RAs) are usually associated with grants supervised by individual faculty members and, when available, are typically offered to a prospective student by individual faculty members.
Teaching assistantships are offered by the department, upon recommendation by the department graduate admissions committee. Our department teaching assistantships are typically used to support graduate students who assist in teaching labs in introductory physical geography and courses in GIS and remote sensing. Funded students usually continue to receive their aid while in residence up to a maximum of two years (optional), if they make satisfactory progress toward the degree.
