Program Description:

The South University Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling degree program will prepare you for a rewarding career of helping others resolve life issues and overcome emotional issues. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of mental health counselors is expected to grow by 36 percent between 2010 and 2020, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.

Clinical mental health counselors work in a variety of settings including private practices for individual, couples, groups, and family therapy, agencies that target a variety of mental health issues and populations, residential mental health, substance abuse facilities, outpatient substance abuse centers, hospitals, and state and local government.

Clinical Mental Health Degree Curriculum

The program is designed to provide you with:

  1. An advanced and broad training regarding relevant theories, principles, and dynamic applications across a diverse multicultural spectrum.
  2. The necessary skills to engage in effective assessment, diagnostic, and treatment practices.
  3. Competency in the understanding of ethical, legal, and professional issues.
  4. The ability to understand the significance and utility of current research to the field

The program is designed to enable program graduates to achieve all initial eligibility criteria to become a Licensed Mental Health Clinician in their state and certified as a National Certified Counselor (NCC) by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). The length of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is eight quarters, full time and coursework is designed in accord with the licensing requirements of the states in which the program is offered. As a result, the program may not meet the licensing requirements of all states. The student should contact the licensing board in the state in which they anticipate seeking licensure to determine the appropriate program.
