Degrees Offered:

Masters of Science in Organizational Leadership

Format: Hybrid

Program Description:

According to the Journal of Healthcare Leadership, the delivery of healthcare today depends on a growing group of professionals coming together as an interdisciplinary team. At the same time there are many forces that are shaping the delivery of healthcare. Many of these forces are being driven by changes in concepts of health and well being, research and discovery, as well as the development of new technologies. Yet it is only through dynamic leadership that the professionals themselves will be in a position to guide these transformations. Effective leadership is necessary to meet the challenges of delivering quality patient healthcare in the 21st century. As organizations and the world become "flatter," with less emphasis on authority, leadership is needed on all levels. Effective leadership has proven results, from the release of employees' potential to improved patient care, to budgetary performance at the bottom line. According to the Institute for Strategic Change, the "stock price of well-led companies grew by over 900% over 10 years, compared with 74% for poorly led companies". In research with Harvard Business School, executive search consultants found that the quality of leadership accounts for some 15-20% of the total difference in organizations' performance. The U.S. Bureau of Labor forecasts two of the top ten job growth areas are in healthcare. The Leadership for the Health Care Professional concentration provides health care professionals, including nurses, therapists, and technologists with an overall understanding of leadership issues in the context of contemporary health care. This concentration is designed for aspiring and committed professionals who are interested in careers in health services administration in such settings as hospitals, managed care organizations, medical group practices, ambulatory, long-term care, and home health care facilities, insurance and pharmaceutical companies, consulting firms, government, for profit, and nonprofit sector organizations. Emphasis is placed on leadership theories and practices, policy strategies, and ethical decision making as they relate to the health care field. The learning outcomes for this concentration include: 1.Students will demonstrate an in-depth understanding of health care in America and globally by critiquing the design, structure, organization and delivery of health care services. 2.Students will demonstrate an understanding of the budgeting process for the health care profession. 3.Students will develop the leadership skills needed to work in teams, build cross-functional teams, and facilitate collaborative decision-making.
