Program Description:

This program is designed for science teachers who: Are currently teaching and who are already certified, would like to pursue a Masters Degree in Science Education but may be unable to attend regular class sessions, are competent in a science content area or who have the ability to develop such content expertise on ones own. The program will not emphasize content development but rather will focus on science teaching methods, research, pedagogy, and philosophy. Although this program is not structured around science content, this content is embedded within each of the courses. The Science Education major in the Curriculum and Instruction degree is designed to prepare students to address current issues or problems related to learning, teaching, diversity, and policy science education through research. Overall, this major has three defining or signature features. First, the major is interdisciplinary. That is, the major is designed to foster connections and collaborations between education and the sciences. Second, the major promotes and supports methodological pluralism. The questions challenging education today are complex and multifaceted. They cannot be adequately addressed through a narrow range of methods. Thus, the major is designed to help all students develop a familiarity with, and respect for, a wide range of methods and approaches used in educational research. Third, and perhaps most importantly, the major fosters the development of an intellectual community of scholars. Students who enter this major will not only move through a set of required and elective courses; they will also be part of a diverse and collaborative community of inquiry. They will be viewed and treated as authentic (though novice) colleagues, who have relevant experience and expertise to bring to bear on questions of shared importance. We admit a select number of students with the necessary preparation and dedication needed to succeed in this content and research-intensive major. The major has been designed to maximize interactions between faculty and students and to focus on current issues of research and practice. It also provides students with considerable flexibility as they pursue their developing goals and interests. A central feature of the major is the scaffolded apprenticeships that will help students become a productive researcher and teacher educator in science education. All students in the major will therefore have an opportunity to form close working relationships with faculty researchers from a wide range of fields, in the pursuit of a deep understanding of science learning and the cultural and institutional contexts in which it is supported and organized.
