Program Description:

The Curriculum and Instruction degree with a specialization in Mathematics Education prepares scholars and practitioners to be leaders in the field of Mathematics Education. The Mathematics Education major at the master’s level is an advanced degree for certified mathematics teachers. This degree enhances mathematics teachers’ professional knowledge and skills through an emphasis on the application of current research in Mathematics Education. Faculty provide opportunities for graduates to further pedagogical and subject matter knowledge and skills by focusing on research-based best practices. The Mathematics Teaching major at the master’s level is designed to prepare candidates for a Professional Teaching Certificate. The curriculum offers opportunities for candidates to plan, deliver and manage high quality instruction under the guided supervision of both university faculty and school-based middle and high school mathematics teachers. For advanced studies, the EdS (Specialist) offers the graduate student more in-depth opportunities to further knowledge and practice in the areas of mathematics teaching and learning. Through focusing on the teaching and learning of mathematics, faculty and PhD students in the mathematics education major engage in scholarly research to inform the field. Through interactions in a community of scholars that spans not only the department and college but the university, students in the doctorate are apprenticed through coursework and sets of related experiences to work across conventional domains to address significant problems in our field.
