Master of Arts in Liberal Studies

Format: Campus

Program Description:

The Master’s in Liberal Studies (MALS) with a concentration in Museum Studies at Florida International University (FIU) is designed for students who possess a strong desire for intellectual growth and show an interest in interdisciplinary research. It offers students individualized programs of graduate study that transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries and yet lie squarely within the venerable tradition of liberal education. MALS students develop individualized, interdisciplinary, flexible programs of study that allow them to fit the degree to fit to their career goals. The Master’s of Arts in Liberal Studies with a museum studies concentration degree has five components comprising 33-36 semester credit hours. The MALS is available to students who hold a Bachelor’s degree. No GRE is required. • Students to complete up to 15 credits of prescribed MALS specific coursework. • The Museum Studies Core is three courses (12-15credits) designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the theory, history, techniques, and problems common to museums, historical societies, and related institutions and earn at least 160 hands-on hours of Internship Experience. • Museum Studies Electives – Education, Registration, Curatorial Practices and Exhibition Development – introduce students to specific areas of museum work. Students have the flexibility to choose courses (in consultation with the Academic Director) drawn from two different liberal arts areas for which FIU is well known, such as Anthropology, Art History, History, or related area studies which will help them achieve their professional goals. • Academic mastery is exhibited in each student’s Capstone Project (Master’s Essay or Master’s Thesis). Under the guidance of a faculty committee, the final product, an extended research paper, will address a subject of pertinence to museum studies. Students will engage conceptually and professionally with the liberal studies while contributing to the museum studies field.
