Program Description:

The executive master’s in Emergency & Disaster Management immerses experienced practitioners in the high-intensity field of emergency management through a unique combination of online learning and on-site intensives. Participants progress through this one-year program as a cohort, completing five modules that take them around the world to explore hazards and understand emerging challenges across diverse environments. During each module, the cohort comes together for six-day intensives that integrate critical thinking exercises, handson practice, and engagements with some of the world’s top industry experts and organizations. In between these intensives, participants engage in online study, developing a deeper understanding of key concepts and industry best practices through individual coursework, virtual classroom discussions, and group projects.

Applied Curriculum: Thought leaders and practitioners bring real-world experience directly to the classroom, introducing students to the global complexity of natural and man-made disasters.
Leadership & Strategic Thinking: Students learn to identify and understand federal, state, and local laws that govern emergency management, enabling them to respond ethically and legally to emergencies and disasters.
Cohort Learning Experience: The program fosters both communication and trustbuilding, key elements of emergency and disaster management. Students learn from each other through group projects, Socratic inquiry, and onsite experiential intensives.
Building Resilience: Students develop the skills they need to effectively communicate risk, make critical decisions, and influence others to act in a crisis situation.

Students earning an Executive Master of Professional Studies in Emergency & Disaster Management acquire the knowledge they need to plan and direct disaster response and crisis management activities for a broad range of disaster and emergency situations. The skills gained from this program prepare students for emergency management careers in government, nonprofit, and corporate sectors, including emergency management, public health and safety, policy and planning, public affairs, humanitarian services, and risk management.

Georgetown has joined forces with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Cranfield University to create the EDM program, preparing future leaders in emergency management through a combination of scenario-based intensives and real-world case studies. Students benefit from LLNL’s national security expertise, advanced modeling and simulation, and data analytics capabilities, which help them develop critical decision-making skills. Cranfield Defence and Security (CDS) provides students with a unique international perspective of emergency preparedness and response, with a particular emphasis on chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN); explosives; resilience; and security sector reform.
