The Interdisciplinary Master of Fine Arts is dedicated to regenerative culture and designed for the 21st century. With dynamic, cross-disciplinary coursework at sites throughout the Americas, this MFA prepares artists to engage with the most pressing issues of our time. The MFA is built around the Nomad9 residencies, which form the heart of the experiential, hands-on curriculum. These sites will explore the Americas from North to South. An ongoing reciprocal relationship is developed with each residency community.
Artists need to learn from a wide range of teachers and educational fieldwork. This program’s faculty includes distinguished artists and designers, as well as a diverse team of experts such as rural craft collective members, community organizers, scientists, historians, and story tellers. The settings may vary from rural to urban, Global North to Global South, and rainforest to desert.
As cultural producers confront climate change, ecological literacy and systems theory become a foundation for innovation. The nature of sustainability is seen in fundamental ecological principles. This MFA program uses these principles as a framework for art production; research and inquiry; and expanded approaches towards creativity.
Artists have much to offer every sector of life. Our world needs the leadership, creativity, and understanding of complexity that artists possess; and we need it now more than ever. Artists’ sensitivity to aesthetics, human nature, materiality, absurdity, and the natural world provides challenges to the status quo. This MFA program embraces an open outcome approach that welcomes students interested in eco art; social engagement; materiality and craft traditions; theory – and future practices yet unnamed.
Artists need to know how to run budgets, find material resources, write clearly, and exercise entrepreneurial abilities. Interpersonal skills, cultural awareness, and problem solving abilities are essential. In addition, an understanding of craft, materials and technologies is vital. This graduate program addresses the whole artist and cultivates maximum human development and professional capacity.
