Sacred Heart University offers a graduate program leading to a Master of Education (M.Ed.). This program is open to those who already have a teacher certification. Designed for the classroom teacher, the M.Ed. builds skills in the areas such as classroom instruction, curriculum, assessing student learning, and practical applications in the content area. This M.Ed. program is offered in Fairfield and Griswold, CT.
The Graduate Teacher Internship is available to candidates pursuing the M.Ed. Full participation in the school-based experience entitles the candidate to 30 credits of tuition. Candidates who hold teaching certificate meet with an advisor to develop a plan of study and apply immediately for a one year school-based experience beginning in either the fall or spring semester.
The internship, our school-based experience for pre-service teachers, has been characterized as a year-long interview and has led to Connecticut teaching jobs for our candidates for over 25 years.
Participants in the School-based Experience will provide instructional assistance under the support of a school administrator for such tasks as:
- Substitute teaching
- Grade level assistance
- guiding small instructional groups
- chaperoning field trips
- leading school projects based on personal talents and expertise
- conducting remediation lessons as recommended in learning plans
Candidates gain valuable experience through this opportunity to work in a school environment, build professional relationships and apply experience toward course instruction.
The Graduate Teacher School-based Experience affords candidates the opportunity to complete teacher certification and/or master's degree program requirements in a supervised setting in a public school. Candidates receive 30 tuition credits toward their Sacred Heart University Education degree.
