Doctor of Nursing Practice-Family Nurse Practitioner
Earn a clinical doctorate and expand your qualifications through the rewarding career track as a family nurse practitioner (FNP) at Sacred Heart University. The College of Nursing’s BSN to Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Degree educates nurses to become advanced practice nurses in the role of the family nurse practitioner. Our program is best suited for nurses with both direct experience in patient care and a robust clinical background but recent graduates will be considered.
Graduates are eligible to take a national examination for certification as a family nurse practitioner and to apply to practice in the expanded role in Connecticut or other states based on regulatory guidelines.
Upon graduation, successful board certification, and state licensing, Family Nurse Practitioners provide comprehensive primary health care to patients across the lifespan.
FNPs educate patients on health promotion strategies, as well as treat acute illnesses and chronic diseases. This includes taking histories, performing comprehensive physical exams, making diagnoses, prescribing medications, and ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests. The FNP typically works in the primary care setting in private practice or in a community health center as a health care provider.
