Program Description:

The doctoral program at the Graduate School of Social Work trains master's-level human service professionals to become social work researchers, educators and policy experts.

Founded in 1968, GSSW's PhD program is among the oldest social work doctoral programs in the nation. It enrolls students from all parts of the United States and around the world.

As a doctoral student, you're encouraged to develop a solid understanding of the theories, social interventions and policies that guide research in your substantive area.
 

The program emphasizes:

  • knowledge development through advanced coursework in theory, policy and research methodology;
  • research competencies through required and elective courses, graduate research assistantships and dissertation research;
  • collaboration with faculty working in diverse, substantive areas including high-risk youth, child welfare, gerontology, mental health, substance abuse and poverty; and
  • teaching skills through a teaching practicum, elective courses and faculty mentoring.

Accreditation:

The Master of Social Work program at the University of Denver is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council on Post-Secondary Accreditation.

In addition to other required MSW or PhD application materials, international applicants to GSSW must submit: (1) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or IELTS results (Paper-based TOEFL score of 587 or Internet-based score of 95; or IELTS score of 7.0) (2) Completed SEVIS Supplement (3) Copy of passport (photo or biographical page) (4)Proof of finances (this form should be returned with a bank letter or other official verification showing how student tuition and living expenses will be financed)
