Program Information

Degrees Offered:

From the successful applicant's chosen primary department., In interdisciplinary quantitative biology.

Format: Campus

Program Description:

Through IQ Biology, students learn the essential competencies demonstrated by knowledgeable and well-rounded researchers who collaborate effectively between disciplines. These competencies may be attained in a number of ways, including courses, lab rotations, and outreach activities.

Three interdisciplinary “core” courses have been developed to provide IQ Biology students with a deeper knowledge of mathematical and computational approaches to solving bioscience and bioengineering problems. These core courses serve as the foundation of the IQ Biology curriculum:

  • Foundations in Interdisciplinary Quantitative Biology Lecture and Practicum
  • Statistics and Computation for Genomes and Metagenomes
  • Cells, Molecules and Tissues, a Biophysical Approach

All first-year IQ Biology students will take these core courses together. These courses are augmented by three 10-week research rotations and two elective “gap-filling” courses that allow students to learn more in relevant areas to which they have been been minimally exposed.

Agreements have already been worked out between the degree programs and IQ Biology to ensure that the combination of the PhD and the certificate in IQ Biology will not add more than an additional semester of graduate work. After joining a particular degree program, your participation in the IQ Biology program will continue to ensure greater access to interdisciplinary ideas, collaborators and resources.
