The mission of the comparative literature graduate program is to provide rigorous, interdepartmental graduate training in the discipline of comparative literature and to foster research and collaboration within those disciplines involving national literatures and their academic languages at the University of Colorado Boulder.
The MA is intended as either a preparation for doctoral study in the field or as a terminal degree in itself. In addition to an undergraduate major in a relevant field, students applying for admission to the MA program in Comparative Literature should have completed three years of college level study or its equivalent in one foreign language. Students are also encouraged to begin study of a second foreign language before applying.
Comparative literature is the study of literature from two or more linguistic groups. In some cases, the study involves literature from different cultures or nations, and extends to the study of different forms of art. Some students of comparative literature, for instance, explore the relationship between literature and film or music, sculpture or painting. The field is quite interdisciplinary, and students of the discipline are well versed in examining how literature and art engage with issues related to philosophy, political science, history and the sciences. They are also well versed in literary theory and criticism, invoking those fields in order to draw comparisons across several different types of literature.
Through its faculty and students, the comparative literature graduate program works with a wide range of departments throughout the university. The program sponsors or cosponsors a rich array of speakers, colloquia and conferences throughout the academic year. In addition to individual departments ranging from anthropology to philosophy, comparative literature regularly cooperates with the campus Center for Humanities and the Arts to organize visits and colloquia.
