Program Information

Degrees Offered:

Certificate in Parenting and Communication Skills

Format: Campus

Program Description:

A lack of positive parenting skills has been identified as a contributing factor in a variety of social problems, including substance abuse, domestic violence, child abuse, and disruptive behavior at home and in the classroom. Parents and educators who communicate clearly and effectively with children on a daily basis are able to provide valuable feedback in terms of children’s capabilities and academic self-concept.

This program is intended to help educators, counselors and parents understand child development and explore positive parenting and communication techniques that can be used to prevent or ameliorate negative situations in the home and classroom. The program also focuses on family adjustment to change or traumatic circumstances, like broken family relationships or the death or incarceration of a family member.

This program was developed in collaboration with the following Riverside County departments: Office of Education, Consolidated Courts, Public School Services and Probation Department, Juvenile Division.
