Degrees Offered:

with concentrations in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Adult Gerontological Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP). MSN graduates are eligible for certification by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN).

Program Description:

The Program in Nursing Science offers the Master of Science in Nursing Science with FNP and AGPCNP concentrations. Graduates completing the FNP concentration will be eligible to sit for the FNP national board certification examination. Graduates completing the AGPCNP concentration will be eligible to sit for the Adult Gerontological Primary Care NP national board certification examination. The program is full-time (2 yrs) and classes are on-campus. The Master of Science (M.S.) in Nursing Science at the University of California, Irvine is a professional degree program which will prepare Registered Nurses in selected specialties and in research so they may assume roles as research-based advanced practice clinicians, administrators, or educators. The program course work is designed to prepare nurses with expertise in a specialized area of advanced nursing practice; role preparation as a nurse practitioner, nurse educator, or nurse administrator; leadership and health policy skills; and research skills. The M.S. degree will also prepare students for future doctoral work. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) Program is designed to prepare nurses to deliver primary health care to families in a variety of settings. NPs take health histories and provide complete physical examinations; diagnose and treat many common acute and chronic problems; interpret laboratory results and X-rays; prescribe and manage medications and other therapies; provide health teaching and supportive counseling with an emphasis on prevention of illness and health maintenance; and refer patients to other health professionals as needed. Nurse practitioners focus on wellness, prevention, and education.


The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN).

International Student Requirements:

Applicants who have completed degrees and/or coursework outside of the United States must submit their final transcripts in English. If the final transcripts provided by the former university are not in English, students will need to submit their transcripts to a transcription service before submitting to UCI. In addition, applicants whose primary language is not English are required to demonstrate proficiency in English by submitting a TOEFL or IELTS test score.
