Program Description:

Our newly revised Master’s of Science Degree focuses on new media forms being invented here in Silicon Valley. Whether you wish to pursue a career in advertising, journalism, public relations, or a related communications field, studying at San José State University will combine attention to established principles with hands-on experience. You will work in multimedia teams to produce media products for the variety of platforms used in the communications industry. Our program offers a research track leading to a thesis and a professional track leading to a multimedia project. Courses in both tracks are taught mostly in the evening to accommodate students holding daytime jobs. Those who are able to study full time may finish in three semesters if they arrive with some multimedia skills. Those who have few multimedia skills may be required to take an extra course to bring them up to speed. All of the courses in our curriculum are designed with an emphasis on new media. This is true whether the course is skills-oriented or focuses on the enduring social issues inherent in producing, transmitting, and receiving mass media messages. While our undergraduate curriculum trains students to contribute to multi-media teams, our graduate program prepares students to become leaders of those teams. Hence, we combine practical, hands-on instruction with the kind of broad intellectual foundation common in more traditional programs. We are now accepting applications for matriculation in August 2013. The deadline for applications is April 1. The deadline for documents (GRE scores, transcripts, letters of recommendation) is April 15. We begin reviewing documents when your application is complete, so the sooner you apply, the sooner you will hear from us.
