Program Information

Degrees Offered:

Ph.D. - Mythological Studies, M.A. - Mythological Studies

Format: Campus

Program Description:

For nearly 20 years, Pacifica's Mythological Studies Program has offered the only doctoral program in the country that investigates mythologies and cultural traditions through the lenses of religious studies, literature, and depth psychology. Students discover recurring mythic themes in classic and contemporary literature, theater, art, and film, while recognizing cultural and historical contexts. Fostering the confluence of scholarship and imagination, the program invites students into the art of writing. A faculty of distinguished scholars and inspired teachers attracts artists, writers, teachers, psychologists, pastoral counselors, executives, lawyers, and life-long learners who seek to understand and express the depths of the psyche. The Master of Arts degree is awarded after the first two years of study and a comprehensive examination. The program continues with a third year of classes including a sequence of research courses and the development of an acceptable concept paper for the dissertation. The fourth and fifth years of study focus on dissertation writing and research. Continuing supervision is provided for the completion of the dissertation. Joseph Campbell Scholarship Program The Joseph Campbell Scholarship Fund is for the M.A/Ph.D. Mythological Studies Program. A number of the scholarships are offered to newly admitted students in the Mythological Studies Program based on extreme financial hardship, academic merit, and content of essay.

All of Pacifica's graduate degree programs are accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
