The Department of Physics recognizes three broad areas of emphasis in basic and applied research: 1) Space sciences including studies of atmospheric physics, solar physics, and plasma physics; 2) Optics/quantum electronics including studies of laser physics, optical properties of matter, and electromagnetic scattering; 3) Solid state/materials including studies of crystal growth, solid state physics, and superconductivity.
