Ph.D. Doctor of Cancer Biology
Cancer Biology is a theme within Graduate Biomedical Sciences (GBS), an umbrella program of eight PhD themes. The advantage of joining is that students have access to all 350+ faculty within GBS as well as courses from every theme, allowing for an interdisciplinary academic and research experience.
The goal of the Cancer Biology theme is to train the next generation of cancer biologists so that they will make significant contributions to basic and clinical research. Students will receive training over a broad base, integrating molecular, cellular, biochemical and biological experimental approaches. Combinations of courses, seminars, small group discussions and hands-on research provide each student with a customized dissertation experience. Students will have opportunities to work with outstanding investigators throughout the UAB campus in the areas of tumor microenvironment, metastasis, cancer genetics, stem cells, gene therapy of cancer, pharmacology/toxicology, signaling and tumor immunology. Successful graduates will have a firm foundation upon which they can build careers in academia, research institutions, industry or government.
While in the program, students are provided an annual stipend of $29,000, paid tuition and fees, and single-coverage health insurance.
