Program Description:

Graduate students in English Studies at Auburn can be assured of a rewarding and supportive experience. We offer a well-funded, dynamic experience as a GTA, grants for research and travel, an outstanding faculty working in all areas of English Studies, and unique opportunities for students to develop close mentoring relationships with faculty. We admit about 20-25 fully-funded students per year, which allows us to maintain small class sizes and a low faculty-to-student ratio of 1:2. Masters students at Auburn develop a broad understanding of all facets of English Studies at the same time they pursue one of three concentrations in literary studies, composition and rhetoric, or creative writing. With a GTA, students gain valuable experience as university-level teachers and, in many cases, additional professional development geared toward their concentration. As a terminal degree or as a springboard to more advanced study, the MA prepares students for careers in writing, editing, business, secondary and community college teaching, and other professions seeking broadly educated individuals with excellent analytic and communication skills. Doctoral students train to become 21st-century teacher-scholars with dynamic approaches to teaching and innovative programs of research. PhD-level GTAs develop a diverse teaching portfolio that includes both parts of our first-year composition sequence; world literature; and courses in their area of expertise, whether British or American literature or advanced composition. As much as 80% of our incoming PhD class receives additional fellowships and research stipends that supplement the GTA. Among our graduate faculty are a University Eminent Scholar and recent winner of the MLA’s prestigious James Russell Lowell Prize, a Fulbright Fellow, and numerous recipients of competitive grants and visiting fellowships. Our curriculum features regular course offerings in all historical periods of British and American literature, as well as topics in literary theory, rhetorical theory and practice, composition studies, and linguistics. With a commitment to innovative and up-to-date graduate teaching, our program places a special emphasis on topics involving technology, sustainability, diversity, and globalism. Auburn’s English Department is also home to a thriving program in technical and professional communication that offers graduate courses in document design, grant and proposal writing, and web development.
