Cultural Awareness, MSc
Drawing on the closely related disciplines of sociology and anthropology, it familiarizes students with the nature of cultural change in contemporary societies and investigates its implications in terms of personal and professional lives as well as policy development and practice.
It combines an introduction to theoretical and methodological insights and important case studies from two major social science academic disciplines;
The course encourages the student’s own reflexive investigation of their experience of cultural difference and is concerned with the implications of cultural diversity for policy and practice.
The scheme’s emphasis on the nature of cultural phenomena and processes provides a framework for locating contemporary concerns with the personal and policy implications of, among other things, ethnicity, multiculturalism, migration, gender, new identities, lifestyles and consumption.
The course will enhance the student’s ability to understand their personal experience and predicaments as symptoms of more general social structural and cultural change.
The scheme will develop both relevant analytical skills and students’ personal skills to aid interacting appropriately with people perceived to be from different cultural backgrounds and will enhance students’ career prospects.
