Program Description:

This programme is designed to embrace the ideas of students from a broad range of cultures and design backgrounds. It will encourage you to experiment with highly distinctive and challenging forms and ideas of design communication. Rapid advances in communication and digital technologies have changed the very nature and scope of the design world. Traditional boundaries between different media types, practice, corporate culture and design disciplines have, in many ways, broken down, merged and created new ways of thinking and application. These advances have created exciting new opportunities for designers to embrace interdisciplinary approaches. To do this, you will be encouraged to critically analyse your own practice. This analysis will be performed by evaluating contemporary issues and theories of communication design from a one-to-one through to a global perspective, enabling you to challenge conventions, production methods and your target audiences, whilst developing your own personal practice and ideas. Subjects covered include mass communication, multi-lingual typography, digital media, web-based communications, visual communication and entrepreneurship. Along with study visits, professionals and guest speakers will share their experiences in workshop and seminar settings to complement your lectures and seminars. You will have the opportunity to develop the critical thinking and skills required for a successful career in Communication Design. Such thinking and skills will enable you to respond positively to changing technologies and practices and the emergent demands of clients and consumers. The programme enables you to think of Communication Design as a means to nurture your own entrepreneurial venture, or to join the industry at management level. This programme is one of the MA Design pathways which require you to present a portfolio of work.
