Program Description:

This programme is one of the few nationally recognised, accredited programmes in the field of Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD)/Dyslexia teaching. Aims: The purpose of the PCES is to prepare suitably qualified professionals for professional practice as Specialist Teachers (ST). Teaching on the programme addresses both academic and practical content, and learning opportunities are provided within the University and on professional placements. The programme ensures that the STs develop the expertise required to enable them to conduct literacy assessments and teach pupils/students with SpLD/Dyslexia in a wide context. Structure and Assessment: The programme consists of three masters’ level units, each proving 20 M-Level credits and each amounting to 200 hours of student effort. The taught elements of these units take place in the Autumn and Spring Terms of each academic year. The Summer term allows participants to complete the practical and professional elements of the programme. These units relate to different types of learning outcomes, each associated with particular teaching/learning and assessment activities: A 4000 word assignment is undertaken for each of the units. These assignments are based upon the academic, professional and practical aspects of the programme. The additional professional qualification is assessed using the guidelines set out by the BDA and can be seen here.
