Program Description:

It is also recognised by the Joint Council for General Qualifications and allows those suitably qualified teachers to write reports for applications for special arrangements for SEN pupils/students for GCSE/GCE/GNVQ examinations. Aims: The purpose of the programme is to prepare suitably qualified professionals for professional practice as Specialist Teacher Assessors (STA). Teaching on the programme addresses both academic and practical content, and learning opportunities are provided within the University and on professional placements. The programme ensures that the STAs develop a definite stance as assessors which will enable them to conduct assessments and identification in a wide context. The problem-centred approach, adopted throughout the programme, derives from the problem-solving approaches of psychological assessment and is at the heart of the Southampton programme. Issues of the professional code of practice are addressed and ethical and legislative practice is adhered to. Structure & Assessment: The programme consists of three masters’ level units. Each unit amounts to 200 hours of student effort and provides 20 credits at masters’ level. These units are normally assessed by means of a 4,000 word assignment. The taught elements of these units take place in the Autumn and Spring Terms of each academic year. The Summer term allows participants to complete the practical and professional elements of the programme. Students carry out audits of academic skills as well as professional skills at the beginning of the programme. Targets are then set as a result of discussion of the audit of skills. These are regularly checked upon to ensure that students monitor their own development both academically and professionally.
