Science 2 Year PGCE
The course begins in September 2008, with on-line activities based in schools. Teaching sessions, based in the School of Education begin in October, with further on-line support. Assessment for the first year of the course is through portfolios of evidence, presentations and short written assignments focusing on children’s learning of science.
Central to your success on this PGCE course is the support you receive from tutors in the University and from mentors in partner schools. Year-on-year, trainee teachers on our PGCE courses evaluate highly the support received from both tutors and mentors. Mentors undertake regular training within the University, so that all school placements are of a consistently high standard.
Trainee teachers from the UK or EU are eligible to a bursary of £7000 for the year of the course and to a further bursary of £9000 for the final year. You will also normally be eligible for a ‘Golden Hello’ on successful completion of the Induction Year.
Eligible trainee teachers will be entitled to a non means-tested maintenance grant (currently £1230) for each year. Additional means-tested grant funding is also available.
Teaching is a rewarding profession in more ways than one, offering fantastic career prospects and development opportunities. The variety of potential career paths available can see you enjoy all kinds of experiences, roles and responsibilities. In secondary schools you can move up the management structure to gain responsibility for Science as a head of department or head of faculty.
Ultimately, you could progress to a senior management position such as deputy or assistant head and/or headteacher - at which point you would have overall responsibility for the management of a school and the education its pupils receive.
