M.S., Postgraduate Diploma
Students gain a working knowledge of the key concepts in materials management and an understanding of the main elements of a materials planning and control system. Familiarity with the principles of Just-In-Time (JIT) and an ability to apply them in the design and operation of a materials and planning control system is regarded as essential. The study of production, purchasing, and logistics and inventory managementprovides a thorough grounding in both the theoretical concepts and the application of practical skills to the respective areas of management. Those students satisfying the progression requirements and selecting to follow the MSc route then go on to consider the strategic management of the materials function, covering the various issues and problems arising from the implementation, evaluation and control of new strategiesin materials management. Further study provides in-depth knowledge and understanding of the role of organisational design and development in the formulation, implementation and control of these strategies. The MSc dissertation requires the application of the knowledge, theories and practical skills gained to a substantial issue or problem, usually based on the student's own work experience. Students selecting to follow the Diploma route must also complete a Project.
